Review: Earth to Chris Cleevy

Chris Cleevy, describes himself as a “master storyteller and sci-fi tragic.” He’s a New York middle schooler with an avid and bright imagination but having difficulties in dealing with the appearance of his single mother’s new boyfriend. These difficulties manifest vivid and overwhelming alien mind-eater thoughts from a recently viewed sci-fi movie. Even his two close friends have noticed his “funny little habits,”described by his mother, such as extremely focused shoe-lacing and constant finger tapping. With the advice of a healthcare professional and the support of his close classmates, Flo and Jayden, Chris is able to begin to work through his issues.
Christof Bogacs and illustrators Hannah Krieger and Sammy Savos deliver an empathetic graphic novel of a mental health challenge in the midst of middle school life, while dealing with a new family situation. It’s a good middle school kid-friendly comic and a quick read.
